• What is a 204?

  A 204, the Load Tendering module, is what the shipper sends the carrier to notify them that there is a shipment they need to have taken to another location.

• What is a 210?

  A 210, the Invoicing module, is the bill that the carrier sends to the shipper after a load is emptied.

• What is a 214?

  A 214, the Shipment Status module, is often sent while loads are in transit from the carrier to the shipper.  These are used to tell the shipper when their load will arrive at the destination.

• What is a 990?

  The 990 is used to accept, reject, cancel, update, and counter loads that are sent from the shipper.

• What is a 997?

  A 997 tells the sender that a map was received.  These can go to and from the carriers and shippers.

• What is a map?

  A map is a transaction set for a particular shipper.  It determine's what data will be used to meet the requirements and guidelines established by the shipper.

• What is a Trading Partner?

  A trading partner is the company for whom our customer carries loads. 
  For example, a common trading partner with many of our customers, and is quite familiar to all of us as well, is Wal-Mart.  You may often recognize the trading partners our customers have as stores you may frequently shop at or brands that you buy.

• What is a Transaction Set?

  A transaction set is the unit of transmitted EDI data.
  The most common ones you will use are 204, 210, 214, 990 and 997.

• What is EDI?

  Electronic Data Interchange, commonly referred to as EDI, is a format used to exchange data from one business to another business. 
  In our case at least one of the businesses is a trucking or freight carrier company.  The other business can vary, but typically is a shipper or trading partner with the trucking company. You can also get a great definition of what EDI is in general from WikiPedia.com .
